Giro d'Italia 2018 last stage in Rome Sunday 27th May 2018

Sunday 27th May 2018 there will be the last stage of the Giro d'Italia 2018 in Rome. A circuit within the Capital of 11.5 kilometers to be repeated 10 times that runs within the city streets and will see the start of the race at 15.55.

Thousands of spectators will be attending the event along the entire route, and due to its location in the central streets of the city and considering the holiday period, will see the usual influx of thousands of tourists and citizens.

St. Patrick’s Day 2017 in Rome

Rome’s Irish community marks St. Patrick’s Day with numerous social events.

St Patrick’s Day in Rome begins officially on Friday 17 March at 10.00, with the annual Mass for Lá Fhéile Pádraig being celebrated by Cardinal Seán Brady at St Patrick’s Church on Via Boncompagni 31 in the Via Veneto area. The Mass is always well-attended by the city’s Irish community and friends of Ireland, who join together to sing a nostalgic rendition of Hail Glorious, St Patrick.

Later that evening, at 19.30, the students of the Pontifical Irish College present an adaptation of Reginald Rose’s classic courtroom drama Twelve Angry Men. The English-language production is repeated the next evening, 18 March, at the same time.

This year the Colosseum will be illuminated in green lights in honour of Saint Patrick, at 21.00 on 17 March, following a recent agreement between Rome’s mayor Virginia Raggi and Ireland’s ambassador Bobby McDonagh, as part of Tourism Ireland’s internationalGlobal Greening initiative.

St Patrick’s Day festivities continue over the weekend with the 26th edition of the Celtic Ball– Rome’s biggest social occasion in Irish circles – on Saturday 18 March at 19.00. This year the annual black-tie ball moves to the Hotel Quirinale on Via Nazionale, providing the event with an “atmosphere of elegance and charm” according to Irish Club president Helen Harrington. Celtic Ball raffle proceeds will be donated to homeless charity Project Rome.

Meanwhile for those who wish to raise a toast to St Patrick with a pint of Guinness, some of the pubs most favoured by the capital’s Irish expats include the Druid’s Den, the Fiddler’s Elbow, Finnegan’s, and Scholars Lounge, all of which are sure to attract large crowds over St Patrick’s weekend.

'Moonlight' to open Rome Film Festival

Director Barry Jenkin's "Moonlight" will open the upcoming 11th edition of Rome Film Festival.

The much-buzzed about film, which will have its European premiere in Rome, is already at the center of a great deal of awards chatter, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The new film from the "Medicine for Melancholy" director explores the life of a young black man growing up in a rough neighborhood of Miami as he struggles to find his place in the world through topics of friends, family and love. 

The film stars Alex Hibbert, Mahershala Ali, Naomie Harris, Jharrell Jermome, Ashton Sanders, Andre Holland and Janelle Monae. 

"Moonlight is an extraordinary film, at the same time powerful and tender, realistic and poetic. It is a great honour to open the Rome Film Fest with such a work of art," said Rome's artistic director Antonio Monda. 

"This is a film destined to go a long and successful way and which will stay in our hearts; it also confirms the great, genuine talent of Barry Jenkins." 

The film played Telluride and Toronto and will play in New York before being released in the US on October 21.

During the Rome Festival 2016 there will presented many films. Among the films shown will be "In war and in love" by Pif or the former Hyena and "Storks in mission" which is distributed by Warner Bros. 

Surely the most anticipated films of the season, which will premiere Monday, October 3rd at 21 in the Cinema Barberini in ​​Rome, is American Pastoral by Ewan McGregor. This movie is based on the novel American Pastoral by Philip Roth who is considered one of the masterpieces of contemporary American literature.

Among the famous actors who will take part at the Festival are Viggo Mortensen, the unforgettable Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings but also Tom Hanks that will always be remembered for his performance in Forrester Gump. And still there will be Oliver Stone, David Mamet and Meryl Streep. 

The Rome Film Festival is on from 13th to 26th October 2016.

Correggio and Parmigianino exhibition in Rome

From Saturday (until 26 June) the Scuderie del Quirinale will host the exhibition "Correggio and Parmigianino: Art in Parma in the sixteenth century." Through a selection of masterpieces from the most important museums in the world, the exhibition compares the paths of two absolute stars of the Italian Renaissance, Antonio Allegri called Correggio (1489-1534) and Francesco Mazzola called Parmigianino (1503-1540) . Thanks to the formidable talent of these two artists, the city of Parma became the beginning of the sixteenth century, an artistic center able to fully compete with the great Italian art capitals like Rome, Florence and Venice.




The Scuderie del Quirinale (Quirinal Stables, also called Papal Stables) was built over ten years, from 1722 to 1732 . The Scuderie, together with the Palazzo del Quirinale (Quirinal Palace – official residence of the President of the Italian Republic) and the Palazzo della Consulta (Constitutional Court – originally a villa built upon the ruins of the Baths of Constantine and adapted by Sixtus V as a civil and criminal court), make up a stunning urban space. Tiber Island, another hidden gem overlooked by Romans

Tiber Island, Isola Tiberina. is a very small island, according to some the smallest inhabited in the world. The island, long a little more than 300 meters wide and not more than 90 emerges from the Roman Tiber river and it is connected to the banks of the Tiber by two bridges: the Cestius bridge to Trastevere, with the central arch which dates from 46 BC. In the direction of the Jewish Ghetto is the Fabricio bridge, built in the 62 BC, called bridge Quattro Capi, for the Roman herms that adorn the edges. It has the shape of a ship, hence the legend that the island is located in the place of a boat submerged.

But there are many other legends about the origin of this small island: one takes us back in 509 BC when, the last king of Rome, Lucius Tarquinius Superbus, was ousted by the people and as a sign of hatred towards the tyrant the mob tossed into the Tiber a huge quantity of grain belonging to the king and enough to form an island.

But the best known legend is the one linked to the cult of Asclepius, god of medicine. This would explain the connection, which always existed, between the island and the activity of assistance to the sick. In 291 BC the city of Rome was hit by a terrible plague that claimed many victims and the priests, after having consulted the Sibylline books, sent a delegation to Epidaurus, a place of worship of Aesculapius.

The ambassadors returned to Rome on the ship carrying a snake, an animal sacred to the god. When he was closed to the Tiber Island, as reported by Ovid in Metamorphosis, the snake leaped and at the point where he took refuge it was erected a temple dedicated to Aesculapius and the island itself was made architecturally like a ship. On the ruins of the temple it was later built the church of St. Bartholomew on the Island, which preserves a Romanesque bell tower of the twelfth century and, down the aisle of the church, the temple columns.

The ancient medical traditions of that time did not die out with time. In the Middle Ages the island became a shelter for sick run by monks, and continue to this day. Today the island is home for the hospital "Fatebenefratelli" and the Rome's Israelite Hospital.

This lovely island is very beautiful and it is often overlooked by romans. There are nice cafes and a very good ice cream place.

An itinerant knife grinder works from his bycicle on the streets of Rome near the Colisseum. The world of inflatables drones comes to Rome on 17th February 2016

Participants will include universities, laboratories and companies who are studying or have already started using these particular flying machines, from simple radio-controlled blimp tethered to up to metaplano. There will be a presentations of the Italian Aerospace Research Centre (CIRA), Parthenope University of Naples, the Association Blimps Archimedes and, on the face of the companies, Nimbus, the Next Fly Consortium of Italdron, Images to flight, Droinwork, and TecnoFly2008 Salento Drones.

Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight latest film will receive a really special 70mm premiere in Rome.

On 28th January 2016 the event will be held at Cinecittà Studios as the famous 'Teatro 5' will become a winter set to reflect the landscape of the film. The director Quentin Tarantino will be present for the event, together with actors Kurt Russell and Michael Madsen.

The event is themed on number 8, with 888 guests for Tarantino’s 8th film, centered on 8 characters.

Teatro 5 is where Federico Fellini used to live when he was working at Cinecittà Studios and has  held his name ever since. For the Hateful Eight film presentation, spectators will be taken in  full blown winter scenery, full of references from the story of the film.

The 188-minute film are shown with a 3:48 minute overture from musician Ennio Morricone.

The Hateful Eight has 3 Oscars nominations for best supporting actress, best original score and best photography.
