The underground lake in Monteverde

Visit Penthouse Apartment Monteverde in Rome

A special feature for the history of Monteverde is the presence of a proper underground quarry in the basement of the University Hospital of San Camillo.

Speleologists of underground Rome, in 2013 did a survey and in May 2014 they published photos and news on the rediscovery of this extraordinary underground lake.

It dates back to the institute building sanatorium, when, during the construction of the foundations, was discovered an underground cave, on which the foundation of the structure were placed.

The cave, large 7000 square meters and 10 meters high, consists of a greenish yellow stone walls that characterize the subsurface of the neighborhood, and maintains a constant temperature throughout the year, equal to 13 degrees.

A part of it, about 50 meters, is full of ground water, drinking water, which was used for the hospital and for the irrigation of gardens of the complex.

Few things you should know about Monteverde in Rome

Visit Penthouse Apartment Monteverde Rome

Above the breathtaking Janiculum hill, you find Monteverde, Rome’s common "getaway" neighborhood, very much sought after for its parks and green. Rome's largest urban park, Villa Pamphili, is the area's centerpiece where you can find low costs food and accommodations and peace and quiet. Monteverde is simply far enough from the heavy traffic and congestion you want avoid on a Roman vacation however, close enough to the historical center to experience the unique beauty of Rome.  This family-oriented quarter is like a well earned stroll in the park.

Monteverde is typically divided in 2 components, Monteverde Vecchio, a largely early twentieth century neighbourhood of stately villas, and Monteverde Nuovo, most of that consists of semi-high rises buildings made within the last half of the twentieth century.

The star attraction is Villa Doria Pamphili formerly possession of the Pamphili family, currently, however is a public park, the most important in Rome.

Both the American University of Rome and the American Academy in Rome are in Monteverde.

You will, of course, need to explore the historic center of Rome. That can be done from Monteverde efficient public transport network. Tram line 8, Rome's newest over ground train, runs, every 3 minutes, the Circonvallazione Gianicolense to Piazza Venezia, passing via Trastevere, Campo de Fiori and the Jews quarter. The journey to Piazza Venezia takes about 20 minutes. From there you can easily reach St. Peter's Church, the Colosseum and the Roman Forum just to name few attractions.
